A Ray of Sunshine

Sunshine (one day old)

The best news of the summer is that we had a heifer calf born in August! She’s a true ray of sunshine!

Sunshine is the third generation in our herd and has been an absolute joy to raise so far. She was nursing on her own within hours of her birth – even nursing all four of her mama’s quarters standing in one spot!

After a few weeks alone with mama, Sunshine slowly started becoming more interested in the other cows and calves in the herd and now she regularly spends time with both of her grandmas, and even nurses them too sometimes.

Sunshine (three weeks old)

We started working on getting Sunshine friendly with humans and introducing her to the halter at a younger age than we have with other heifers and she’s taken to training wonderfully. She is a blessing and a gift from the Lord during this tough farming year!

Record Drought

Prior to Sunshine’s birth (and subsequently too) we experienced a drought – the second driest year on record for our area. After grazing the cows through all of our rotational grazing paddocks just one time, they did not grow back enough to feed the cows again without supplemental hay. We started feeding hay in June and continued all summer. The drought finally ended in late September and the end of the month has felt like spring with the pastures greening up again!

A New Pest

Itch mite bites!

This summer we experienced a pest we had never heard of before. I was worried I was becoming allergic to hay until we realized what was happening – one of the loads of hay we got this summer had itch mites in it. Itch mites are tiny insects the size of a particle of dust (not visible to our eyes) that can be found in hay in the late summer. They usually eat other insects that get into the hay but can bite people and animals too and they are related to ticks so their bites can hurt and itch badly. I was one of the unlucky ones that had huge welts all over my abdomen and even in the bend of my elbow and underarm where I carried the hay. I found Lavaderm from Young Living to be super helpful with the itch and inflammation, which felt a lot like poison ivy rash to me and lasted about as long. Just thinking about it now has got me itchy again!

Winter Preparations

Certified organic hay delivery

On a happier note, this month we took delivery of a full truck load of certified organic hay, which should get the nine cows we’re currently feeding through the rest of the fall and winter until spring comes again! The children are having a blast playing on the bales as usual.

Working on a wall of firewood

We also stacked all our firewood this month. This year we decided to stack it like a wall surrounding our wrap around porch. Some of it is under a roof and a lot of it is not. We shall see how we like this setup, but at the very least it’s a lot closer to the house than it has been in the past. I love the seasonal winter preparations that we work on as the days begin to shorten in the fall!

A New Garden Bed

Before: No grass 3 years after construction ended because of constant foot traffic plus dogs and children digging in the dirt

Another source of joy for me this summer was transforming the beat up construction entrance to our home into a garden bed and brick and stone path! Most of the plants (in the photos below) are perennial and should come back next year, including the fluffy “Marshmallow” Daisies (at the bottom right). We also included my favorite variety of hosta called “Diamond Lake,” “Soft Touch” hollies, a dwarf butterfly bush (that smells amazing!) and a bird bath, which was used all summer by many birds. The one annual flower we planted is the Polka Dot Periwinkle, which grew and spread beautifully despite the drought here (I did water them a handful of times until they were established).

After:

Almost weaning time

Rainbow is halter trained and comfortable with humans touching her all over!

We have just over a month left until we’re going to wean the older calves, Rainbow and Blackberry. In preparation for potentially selling calves, we completed updated disease testing on all our cows and everyone came back negative for Johnes, BVD and BLV.

Rainbow’s training is coming along well. She’s just shy of 5 months and about 38 inches tall. We expect her to mature around 47 inches, but her height is not matching up with the Jersey heifer growth chart. It’s making me think of when our oldest was a baby and I learned that the baby growth charts were based on formula fed babies, and breastfed babies grew faster than the charts in the early months. Rainbow has nursed on-demand since we grafted her on to our cow at about a week old and I suspect this is why she’s growing faster than the chart!

There’s much more that has been going on around the farm since my last update in July, but this sure is getting long. I’ll save the rest for later!

Monthly News July 2023

July 7, 2023

It’s July! And my last update was in March! Typical that spring and summer tend to get busy on the farm! Over the last few months we have made a number of changes around our farm, and we are refocusing on our primary purpose of our homestead (other than feeding ourselves), which is to empower other families to holistically raise their own food too! What does that mean we’ve changed? We’re taking a break from selling food from our farm, and we’re focusing more on raising animals for other families as well as education on homesteading holistically through our blog and course.

Since my last update, we and all the animals made it through a two month drought: just take a look at the photo above for proof – much of our pasture is thin and weedy and we’ve been feeding hay all summer to make sure the cows get the nutrition they need! We’ve had a bull calf born and we bought a heifer calf from an organic grass-fed dairy farm (both will be available to go to new homesteads when they are old enough). We temporarily added two more cows to our herd (more on that below). And we purchased three new unrelated rams to create three sheep breeding groups that will allow other families who purchase from us to be able to buy breeding pairs and trios. We have also completed another hatching egg season and I’m hopeful to get a fall garden started within the next month!

A lot of our focus this year is training future family milk cows. Besides the calf we have been working with since her first week of life we are also taking on a challenge (at least for us!) – we’re boarding a cow who has not been trained. Our mission is to train her to be a family milk cow before she goes to her new owners next year. This is the first time we’ve taken on a fully grown cow who hasn’t already been halter and lead trained and we’ll also watch her through calving and get her started with being milked. So far she’s fitting in well with our herd and we’re slowly working on her warming up to humans. We also have her yearling bull calf here to breed our two oldest cows for next year’s calves.

One last thing I’ll mention – a project that is coming together nicely is our chicken breeding project! We have kept many rare and heritage breeds here on our farm and I never could pick just one favorite breed so I started working a couple of years ago with combining some of my favorite birds. Some of the most important traits I’m looking for are that they are excellent foragers and do not have single combs (to avoid roosters with frostbite). Of course we also love beautiful feathers and eggs so many of the birds are blue and splash with slate legs, and beautiful chocolate eyes and some have copper patterns in their feathers. Most of the birds lay seafoam colored eggshells and some lay brown with light speckles. They are truly fun and beautiful birds and eggs and I can’t wait to share them with you in the future!

I hope you are having a great summer!

XO Sarah

Monthly News March 2023

March 1, 2023

Happy March! Are you feeling the spring itch too? It’s been a mostly mild winter, and spring feels like it’s arrived early. We’ve been starting to prep the garden and we started rotationally grazing the sheep again today!

We started moving the cows about once a week last month, and we’ll start transitioning them to more frequent moves as the pasture greens up. The cows and sheep are still getting free-choice hay too. We like to use a slow transition like this to ensure there’s no digestive upset with a sudden change in diet.

We had the vet out to look everyone over and she confirmed our suspicion that the ewes were not pregnant this winter after all. It’s unusual and very disappointing but the ram we had last year did not get them pregnant. Sigh.

We are in the process of buying a proven spotted ram and we’re hopeful for lambs in the spring of 2024 – maybe even some spotted lambs! We are also going to change things up a bit so that we have redundancy and a contingency plan.

What are you up to so far this month?

Monthly News January 2023

January 6, 2023

Happy New Year!

This year, we’re moving into the New Year slowly, sticking with more family time and less busyness. We had a very cold Christmas for our area followed by the new year feeling like spring, with temps in the 60s! We’re still waiting on the lambs to be born and thinking we may use a marking harness next breeding season so we can have a better estimate of due dates! In 2021 we happened to witness breeding so we knew when to expect lambs but not this time.

We’re still making broth continuously to keep us all filled with the warm nourishment it provides daily, and we’re continuing afternoon mineral rich adrenal cocktails for more mental clarity and energy. Of course we’re also continuing to making sure to support our bodies with enough sleep, and making sure our home is filled with safe products so we’re not adding to our toxin load.

There are more announcements for the month below, including a new free homestead accounting course and a new resource to help you get started with your own website or transform your website if you need help improving it!

One last thought: Instead of focusing on resolutions or a word of the year, this year I’m leaning into obedience. I want to improve my heart in submitting and being refined to serve His purpose for me. I’m looking forward to using the Acceptance essential oil blend that is one of the free gifts this month. Using this blend will help me remember that I want to be more obedient, to be “light and salt.” Read more about obedience here.

Monthly News, December 2022

‘Tis the season for colder days, warming up by the fire, and time spent with those you love. Dive in with us as we create a cozy home and turn our focus inward towards the restful winter season and the hope of Jesus Christ.

Happy December from Better with THyme

Happy December!

This month we’re making our final preparations around the farm before the winter weather turns harsh – especially finishing up our new lambing shelters since we’re expecting lambs late this month or early next month!

I’ve had a continuous pot of broth going since Thanksgiving to keep us all filled with the warm nourishment it provides daily, we’ve also been continuing to have adrenal cocktails every afternoon (with additional vitamin C from Super C – which you can get free this month!) and I’ve been really upping our magnesium game lately with double batches of magnesium bicarbonate.

Have you ever made magnesium bicarb? It’s very simple and makes it easier for your body to absorb and utilize the magnesium. Most of us (up to 80% of Americans 😮) are deficient in magnesium AND on top of that, stress causes us to use up even more! This is our most important supplement. I also take Mineral Essence daily, to make sure I’m getting the full range of minerals my body needs.

Of course we’re also continuing to making sure to support our bodies with enough sleep, and making sure our home is filled with safe products – from our cleaning supplies to our personal care and supplements. Plus all the Christmasy diffuser blends for warm, welcoming smells throughout the house!

Below you’ll find seasonal tips, diffuser blends, a Bible reading plan and more for this month, plus info about this month’s free gifts and new releases from Young Living. It’s a lot, so make sure to save this page to come back to throughout the month and I’ll add to it if I find anything else seasonal that I’d love to share with you!
