About Our Family
Family photo

Our family strives to implement permaculture principles in all areas of our farm and lifestyle. Working with Creation and the wisdom of God’s design, our gardens, fields and forests can have all that an annual garden offers but so much more. Stewarding the land for God's glory gives us hope and freedom for the present and eternity.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. -John 15:4

We Love Thyme
Thyme and rustic scissors
We love thyme. With seemingly endless varieties of this aromatic, delicious, medicinal, flowering evergreen ground cover we thought it was a perfect namesake for our farm. We especially loved creating a play on words that reflects hope, regeneration and abundance.

If you’ve been around here a while, you might re If you’ve been around here a while, you might recall that we decided to let the calves have all the milk over the winter to reduce our winter workload.

We started milking again this spring and the cow who is on her second lactation was an easy transition. The other is on her first lactation. We had milked her a handful of times after her calf was born but then took a long break.

When we first started milking again this spring she would not let her milk down for us at all. We started having her calf nurse simultaneously like in the photo and then she’d let down. It has been interesting trying to race a calf, make sure she doesn’t steal the teats we’re milking and watch out for her to butt the udder (and make our jars go flying). 😂

We’ve been slowly transitioning to milking without the calf and yesterday she let her milk down for us for the first time! 😅🙌

Also how cute is Chip behind me? I have photos of his dad doing the same thing! I think he’s going to be a nursemaid personality like his dad. It’s so neat how similar they are. ❤️

Happy Mother’s Day! Talking with a friend this m Happy Mother’s Day! Talking with a friend this morning got me thinking about the harder parts of motherhood and how feelings tend to surface on holidays: expectations, surrender, love, hope, regret, remembering how far you’ve come. I hope you’re giving yourself and your family plenty of grace today.

“The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.”
-Numbers 6:24-26

She opens her mouth with wisdom and the teaching of kindness is on her tonque.
- Proverbs 31:26

Your mistakes do not define you.

When we first started milking both of our cows at When we first started milking both of our cows at the same time we kept the milk separated and I had the kids do a blind taste test.

Everyone agreed that Moonbeam’s milk was better (sweeter) than Mulberry’s. I knew Mulberry was getting thinner than we’d ever seen her get so far while nursing her rapidly growing bull calf.

We took steps to get her weight up and now her milk is just as sweet as Moonbeam’s milk. 🙌

On my next post I’ll share video of how her condition has changed over this spring - for the better! 😅

Fern had a lovely and fun last day with us yesterd Fern had a lovely and fun last day with us yesterday and today she’s been road tripping down to Tennessee! We really enjoyed meeting and talking with her new family. She’s going to be so well loved and taken care of! We have one of her brothers left from this litter looking for his forever home. ❤️

The first house Peter and I bought had a (tiny) la The first house Peter and I bought had a (tiny) lawn filled with dandelions. We went around and picked all the flowers so they didn’t keep reproducing and we could get some more variety in our lawn. 😅 After a few years of naturally improving our soil dandelions did not thrive there any longer.

Now we again have them in many places on our property - especially areas that were disturbed by construction. And of course the kids love to blow the seeds around! It will be interesting to see if and how long it takes for their numbers to dwindle here.

One thing I learned somewhere along the way with permaculture is that you can read your soil by reading your weeds. Dandelion has a root that mines deep in the soil for missing nutrients and brings them back to near the surface. (Which is also why they offer us so much when we eat them!) 💛

“Chip” (on the right) is not being picked up t “Chip” (on the right) is not being picked up this weekend afterall 😢 AND I realized there was an issue with the latest update to our puppy questionnaire form. 🤦‍♀️ That is fixed and we are looking for the right home for this handsome, naturally reared sweetheart! He reminds us very much of his dad (swipe for a recent video of dad.)

If anyone is looking or has been thinking about a Pyrenees, we’d love to share our experiences with you and help you decide if he would be a good match for you. More details and contact info on our website betterwiththyme.farm

I recently realized someone had taken my Bresse ch I recently realized someone had taken my Bresse chick photo from our website and used it on their own. I got some great suggestions on how to address it but decided to take it as an opportunity to take more and better photos.

The first photo is all newly hatched Bresse chicks.

The second photo is a two week old Bresse next to a newly hatched chick. You can see how quickly they grow and you can see the legs are beginning to turn blue (our adult Bresse have red wattles and combs, white feathers and blue legs).

The third photo I took because a friend asked me about the differences/similarities between Bresse and Orpingtons. The two chicks in that photo hatched on the same day and were two weeks old when I took the photo. They will probably be around the same size when fully grown but the Bresse will reach that size in half the time!

He’s still nursing for now, but we’re starting the transition to weaning for both calves. (Starlight is 6 months old.)

We’re hoping to move each of the calves with some sheep friends so the mamas can host another bull. ❤️

This spring when the kids heard me saying it was t This spring when the kids heard me saying it was time to plant seeds our almost 7 year old (who so far has never really taken part in gardening except for harvesting) suddenly took an interests after seeing her older sibling’s sunflower seeds begin to sprout.

I did nothing but provide the materials when asked and she has created a greenhouse, started numerous seeds, excitedly checked on them multiple times daily and has come to me every day, often more than once a day with a new lesson she’s learned about how seeds grow into plants!

These are the moments that keep me going forward with letting the kids lead in their own education.

With each child, I’ve seen similarities in developmental stages but also completely unique timelines of learning and interests. We just have to keep remembering to surrender control and support the natural process. 😅

Have you had any moments like this with your children?
Meet Stellaria! She’s our first white babydoll l Meet Stellaria! She’s our first white babydoll lamb and named for the white flowers blooming profusely when we brought her home.

We were planning to bring her home as a bottle baby but after being gone for a few hours we came home to an unexpected situation. As soon as we arrived home two of our ewes started talking to her as if she was their baby and we quickly realized one of them had lambed a stillborn while we were gone.

It took a little effort but we were able to successfully bond our ewe to this lamb and now they have each other! I’m glad she’s being raised on the milk of her own species and with the social interactions of being with our flock. (We wouldn’t have been able to put her with the flock right away if she didn’t have a mama to protect her.)

Stellaria is extra friendly with people since she had those early days of having her needs met by loving humans. ❤️

Did you know babydoll sheep can be black, white or spotted?

Whether you use one of the recipes or are like our Whether you use one of the recipes or are like our kids and mostly snack on these pretty flowers while you’re playing outside, I know you’ll love violet flowers if you haven’t tried them yet.

Violet has many health benefits and can be used medicinally for numerous situations. We also enjoy the greens both raw and cooked.

In the video I meant to say the leaves curl up when they’re young, so that’s a way to help spot violet before it’s fully grown and flowering.
