Lavender was born on our farm when we were boarding her dam. We thought she was one of the most beautiful Mini Jersey calves we had ever seen, so when the opportunity to purchase her as a yearling heifer came up, we were very excited to add her to our herd. Lavender’s personality is reserved with other cows, like her dam, but she has learned to love humans and made a very easy transition to family milk cow, after calving for the first time this year. The first time I milked her she gave the slightest, gentlest nudge that I would not really even call a kick and after the first two says she stood for milking like she had been a milk cow for years already.
Lavender’s pedigree is predominantly Chestnut Oak Minis, a herd that descended directly from Holterholm and Misty Morning Farm cattle. Both bloodlines of small Jersey cows she comes from have been bred for grazing, A2 milk, polled and smaller stature. Holterholm cows average 6,000 pounds per year (2.42 gallons per day), 5.2% butterfat and 3.8% protein.
Lavender had a modest first lactation, peaking at 1.5 gallons, but also like her dam, we anticipate she will increase her volume over her first few lactations. She has a wonderful udder, much like her dam’s with long, even teats and a high and level udder floor. The long length that she and her dam’s teats have are great for hand milking!
Though Lavender appears to be solid fawn, we realized from how much “paint” her first calf has, that Lavender actually has a subtly broken coat. If you look closely, you’ll see she has a white patch of hair in her switch and she has white rings around the base of each ear – interestingly, we’ve also noticed our spot carrier Babydoll sheep usually have this ring too!
