About Our Family
Family photo

Our family strives to implement permaculture principles in all areas of our farm and lifestyle. Working with Creation and the wisdom of God’s design, our gardens, fields and forests can have all that an annual garden offers but so much more. Stewarding the land for God's glory gives us hope and freedom for the present and eternity.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. -John 15:4

We Love Thyme
Thyme and rustic scissors
We love thyme. With seemingly endless varieties of this aromatic, delicious, medicinal, flowering evergreen ground cover we thought it was a perfect namesake for our farm. We especially loved creating a play on words that reflects hope, regeneration and abundance.

Blossom had a head start on all of our other dogs Blossom had a head start on all of our other dogs this year with shedding their winter coats. After puppies are weaned the mamas completely blow their fluffy undercoat and are left with just the coarse, longer outer coat.

The others will eventually catch up to Blossom but are losing their undercoats in stages throughout the spring and summer. A Pyr’s coat should never be shaved or cut short. The double coat functions perfectly to keep them warm when needed and to protect them from sunburn when needed.

I love how we can see the structure and muscle in her body while her coat is like this (third pic).

And couldn’t resist adding that Blossom has the most gentle Pyr paw ever (last pic).

Now if we could just get her to respect the fences like most of our other dogs! 😝
The last few days have been filled with learning f The last few days have been filled with learning for me. 😍

I love gaining a deeper understanding of how our bodies work and the research behind targeted supplementation.

Did you know there are different types of collagen that benefit our bodies in different ways?
Yawn! 🥱 Caring for a 4 month old Pyr with a bro Yawn! 🥱 Caring for a 4 month old Pyr with a broken leg kind of feels like having a 50 pound newborn who pants, whines and barks to make his needs known. Trying to figure out his cues for what he needs, getting up at night etc has been a big change. Plus multiple long distance drives for vet visits to check progress… all while making sure to stay on top of our regular farm chores and family needs. The last couple of weeks have been exhausting!

I am so so grateful for my Young Living business right now. Being able to continue to work with a changed schedule and still be a part others discovering the empowering feeling of taking their wellness into their own hands is so rewarding - and a big part of what keeps me going through trials like these.

I’ve never actually “foraged” elder but do g I’ve never actually “foraged” elder but do grow several cultivars in our garden and they’re all blooming right now! 😍

A friend dug new spring shoots from her garden for us many years ago and they traveled with us when we moved! I also bought other cultivars from a small organic family nursery.

They get bigger and grow more flowers and berries every year! We give some to our animals and leave plenty for the wild birds too.

I bet you’ve heard of elderberry syrup but have you ever had elderflower?

Our family went from strictly dairy free for about Our family went from strictly dairy free for about 8 years to trying to figure out how to value our extra milk!

This week I took a peek at the milk section of our local co-op to see what they offered and how the prices compared.

There were several options that were organic, pasture raised and there were even A2/A2 and goat milk options, but there’s a couple of glaring problems with all this milk.

It’s pasteurized or ultra-pasteurized and has added A & D. Pasteurization heats milk to 170 and ultra-pasteurized milk is flash heated beyond the boiling point to 230 degrees.

This heat degrades vitamins and destroys enzymes, making the end product difficult to digest and lacking nutrition. 😬 If you’ve been around here a while you are familiar with the idea that dogs need a raw diet in order to get the enzymes necessary for proper digestion. Wouldn’t it be smart to do the same for ourselves? ☺️

And adding back synthetic forms of what heat has destroyed does our bodies no favors. Vitamin D isn’t really a vitamin either - it’s a hormone. Why would we want to dose ourselves with this indiscriminately without knowing what an individual needs? 🤨

Raw milk done right is not only safe, it’s even healing. After slowly reintroducing our family has gone from dairy-intolerant to thriving on raw milk and experiencing healing from other food allergies as well!

If you want to find raw milk near you, get in touch with your local WAPF chapter, visit realmilk.com or farmmatch.com

Have you ever had raw milk?
Is it just us or are the ticks out in droves where Is it just us or are the ticks out in droves where you are right now too? We’ve had a cooler, wet spring and they seem to be seriously thriving. 😖
If you’ve been around here a while, you might re If you’ve been around here a while, you might recall that we decided to let the calves have all the milk over the winter to reduce our winter workload.

We started milking again this spring and the cow who is on her second lactation was an easy transition. The other is on her first lactation. We had milked her a handful of times after her calf was born but then took a long break.

When we first started milking again this spring she would not let her milk down for us at all. We started having her calf nurse simultaneously like in the photo and then she’d let down. It has been interesting trying to race a calf, make sure she doesn’t steal the teats we’re milking and watch out for her to butt the udder (and make our jars go flying). 😂

We’ve been slowly transitioning to milking without the calf and yesterday she let her milk down for us for the first time! 😅🙌

Also how cute is Chip behind me? I have photos of his dad doing the same thing! I think he’s going to be a nursemaid personality like his dad. It’s so neat how similar they are. ❤️

Happy Mother’s Day! Talking with a friend this m Happy Mother’s Day! Talking with a friend this morning got me thinking about the harder parts of motherhood and how feelings tend to surface on holidays: expectations, surrender, love, hope, regret, remembering how far you’ve come. I hope you’re giving yourself and your family plenty of grace today.

“The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.”
-Numbers 6:24-26

Your mistakes do not define you.

When we first started milking both of our cows at When we first started milking both of our cows at the same time we kept the milk separated and I had the kids do a blind taste test.

Everyone agreed that Moonbeam’s milk was better (sweeter) than Mulberry’s. I knew Mulberry was getting thinner than we’d ever seen her get so far while nursing her rapidly growing bull calf.

We took steps to get her weight up and now her milk is just as sweet as Moonbeam’s milk. 🙌

On my next post I’ll share video of how her condition has changed over this spring - for the better! 😅

The first house Peter and I bought had a (tiny) la The first house Peter and I bought had a (tiny) lawn filled with dandelions. We went around and picked all the flowers so they didn’t keep reproducing and we could get some more variety in our lawn. 😅 After a few years of naturally improving our soil dandelions did not thrive there any longer.

Now we again have them in many places on our property - especially areas that were disturbed by construction. And of course the kids love to blow the seeds around! It will be interesting to see if and how long it takes for their numbers to dwindle here.

One thing I learned somewhere along the way with permaculture is that you can read your soil by reading your weeds. Dandelion has a root that mines deep in the soil for missing nutrients and brings them back to near the surface. (Which is also why they offer us so much when we eat them!) 💛
