Also I know this isn’t ideal for everyone but we have a nice little firewood business on the side right now as we are clearing some of our heavily forested land for more pasture space. My husband has been keeping a lot for us, but also selling firewood and walnut for milling. It’s been a nice additional cash flow for the winter months.

We have also heard local farmers jump into the maple syrup business in the winter but there’s a  lot of equipment involved to scale it I believe.

Looking forward to hearing more ideas!

I love this! Thank you so much, Sarah. This helps a lot. We are thinking about offering Bresse, Blue Americauna, and possibly Marans. But it would involve investing in more “gear” all around.

Would it be in the scope of this course to show how you pack the eggs to ship? I’ve received eggs from several people over the years but I noticed yours are the most well- packed and eco-friendly!

One more non-poultry question:  what age are lambs harvested for meat? Before 1 year? You mentioned the fall so is that more like 6 months? And then if you are raising a wether for example for your own family, what age is best to harvest for maximum return without sacrificing flavor/texture?

    Thank you again!!
